Consider your learning outcomes and how you can use group assignments to meet those outcomes.²  Avoid assigning group work to students that could just as easily have been completed individually.  Group work should be designed in a way that the students learn because they were in a group rather than completing the task alone.¹  Group activities could include one or all of the following:  

• Situations with no right answer: debates, research on controversial issues.  
• Situations with multiple perspectives: analyzing current events, cultural comparisons, or case studies.  
• Situations where there are too many resources for one person to evaluate.
